E-filing Catch-22

TurboTax says it cannot file e-file my federal return because I need to include Form 7217, which TurboTax does not support. TurboTax also tells me e-filing in New York is required. However, it will not e-file any state returns before the federal return has been e-filed -- which, again, it can't do. Does anyone know how to handle this?

I'm pretty annoyed at TurboTax for not supporting a form. E-filing is part of what I paid for.

New York prefers e-filed returns, but there are certain circumstances that make it necessary for you to file your NY return by mail and the state DOES allow mailed returns.    If you could not or did not e-file your federal return then your NY return cannot be e-filed.   It has to be mailed.   It is not possible to e-file any state return if the federal return was not e-filed and accepted by the IRS.

Use another brand of software or go to a tax professional?  Those are the only solutions that I can think of.

But just to back up to a bit, are you sure you need need Form 7217?  That is if you were a partner in a partnership and received NON-cash distributions.

Thank you - yes, I received a distribution of stock from a partnership.

Also: I have put in a LOT of work on this return and if the answer is to start over somewhere else, that's going to be a big problem. And I've already paid for this. I want it to work.

Thinking of just printing and sending in the New York return, even though it tells me I'm not supposed to.

@YEM1

A quick Google AI search indicated that TaxAct doesn't support form 7271 7217

Similarly, but not quite definitely...indicated that the AI didn't think H&RB allowed it either.

(though who knows how accurate the AI actually is on this).

Previous posts about NY paper filing have indicated that NY will take a paper-filing from you, if the tax software used does not allow Federal e-filing....so you should be OK with doing that (but I'm not a NY expert)

Thank you! I'm going with this.

Form 7217 is pretty new. Hopefully TurboTax starts to support it in the future.
