I tried in March 2019 to download my tax return for 2018. It downloaded but would not open. I have tied numerous times. I tried clicking Open. It is frustrating to work with TurboTax and not be able to
download a return for my records. This is the second year in a row. I began having this problem with the 2017 return. Please do something about this difficulty.
To access your current or prior year tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the userID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/
Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and on the section Your tax returns & documents click on Show. Click on the Year and Click on Download/print return (PDF)
If you download the PDF of the tax return, the file can be viewed by any PDF compatible PDF viewer, such as Adobe Reader - https://get.adobe.com/reader/
If you downloaded the tax data file, it will have a file extension of .tax2018 for tax year 2018, then that file can only be opened by the TurboTax software for the same year as the data file.
If you have download the PDF of the return and the file extension is not .pdf but .txt, then rename the file extension to .pdf.
When I click on I "Download/print return (PDF)" nothing happens. No download takes place. Suggestions? I am trying to locate my 2018 tax return.
Does it really take 45 days to receive a copy of my returns federal, i never received them and i need them way faster than 45 days thanks
If you are using the IRS Form 4506 requesting a complete copy of a federal tax return and pay the $50 fee, then it can take up to 75 days to receive the copy from the IRS.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for accessing prior year online tax returns - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/prior-year-return/help/how-do-i-access-my-prior-year-return/01/270...
If you used the desktop CD/Download editions installed on your computer, the only copy of your tax data file and any PDF's will be on the computer where the return was created. TurboTax does not store online any returns completed using the desktop editions.
Or go to this IRS website for free federal tax return transcripts - https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript
For a fee of $50 you can get a complete federal tax return from the IRS by completing Form 4506 - http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506.pdf

Then there is something messed up with that Download link on the TurboTax Tax Home web page where you can click on the prior tax year and click on Download/print return (PDF)
Once you register the 2019 TurboTax account the PDF download should be immediate for a prior year tax return.

We were able to download and view our tax returns, but we'd like to investigate if others are not: if you're receiving a blank download or if you're finding yourself in a loop where you cannot request your data, we'd like to see.
Screenshots are helpful if you're able to provide one to us. You can post them here on this thread, just ensure that no personal data is visible in the screenshot.
I am not able to open a copy of my taxes. I have Adobe, as suggested. What I get is what seems to be the tax forms downloaded, but remain in a loop that says Open, Save. I have tried both Open and Save. Nothing works. I get a coding error message. The same thing happened in 2017. I follow instructions TurboTax gives, and since that does not work, I am seriously considering using another firm to figure my 2019 taxes if this problem continues to persist.
Look at the tax file you are trying to open.
If the file has an extension of .tax2018 then that file can only be opened by the 2018 TurboTax software.
If the file has an extension of .pdf then that file can be opened by any compatible PDF viewer, such as Adobe Reader.
What file did you download? Was it a .tax2018 or .pdf or .txt file? If it downloads as a .txt file, try changing the .txt to .pdf or use a different browser to download it.
In theory your advice seems to be great. However, in my case, it does not work. I have tried many times to access my return. Frustrating, indeed!

What is the exact name and file extension of the file you are trying to open?
