Does TurboTax file form 8621?

TurboTax does not support IRS Form 8621, Information Return by a Shareholder of a Passive Foreign Investment Company or Qualified Electing Fund.

Will I be allowed to file the tax online if I have file form 8621 also.
If tax is filed online how can i send form 8621?

No Turbo Tax doesn't support Form 8621 to be electronically filed.  You may download the form here, but you will need to print and mail your return with this form attached to your return.

Does TurboTax still not prepare a form 8621?

 

If tax is filed online, how can i send form 8621? Do I need to do it through an amended return, done outside of the TurboTax system?

@outbreath11 You would need to complete the form outside of TurboTax and then included it with your tax return.  Your tax return can only be printed and mailed if you are including this form, it cannot be e-filed or attached to an e-filed tax return.

I efiled last year and did not include a form 8621. Do I have to amend it outside of the TurboTax system?

No, you do not need to amend it outside the TurboTax system. You can amend it using TurboTax but you will need to include Form 8621. TurboTax does not support 8621 thus you will need to download a copy here and include it in your return. After you finish the amendment, print and mail your return. Be sure to include the 8621 form you completed after downloading it.

 

The printing and mailing instructions will be included with your amendment. To amend.

 

 For TurboTax Online

 

1. Sign in and scroll down to Your tax returns & documents. 
2. Select 2024 and then select Amend (change) return.
3. Select Amend using TurboTax Online.
4. Follow the instructions. 

For the Desktop, you will need a 2024 version of the software.

 

1. Open the specific tax file you want to change. This 2024 tax file should be stored in your computer.
2. Go to the Federal Taxes tab (or "Personal" depending on your version).
3. Look for Other Tax Situations.
4. Scroll down to Other Tax Forms and select Amend a Return.
5. TurboTax will ask, "Did you already file your return?" Select Yes.
