Does turbo tax include state when recommending standard or itimizing

turbo tax recommends standard deduction yet if i take itemized my combined payout is almost $500.00 less with state included. Doesn't turbo tax include state when it makes its recommendations?

No, the recommendation is for the federal return only. You should file the way that provides you with the biggest combined refund. You may be able to take the standard deduction on the federal return and claim itemized deductions on the state. The states that allow you to do so are as follows:

  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • California
  • Delaware
  • Hawaii
  • Idaho
  • Iowa
  • Kentucky
  • Minnesota
  • Mississippi
  • Montana
  • New York
  • North Carolina
  • Oregon
  • Wisconsin
