I am a young digital artist that does commissions for users online through PayPal as a hobby. I'm currently a resident in Texas and was wondering if I could have some advice on whether I need to fill out tax forms for the income I receive from my art. I already have the knowledge that if I need to make $400 a year for certain stuff to qualify. I can safely say I do not make even 25% of that much in a year currently and only do this as a hobby for my passion for digital artworks while still in high school. Is there anything I would need to fill out at the end of the month/year to safely make my art without breaking any regulations? Thank you for your help in advance.
You will not need to file a tax return reporting your income from your digital art until you have made more than $400 for the year. This $400 would be the total of your income minus any expenses you incurred (like a PayPal fee for example). Once you hit that threshold, you would need to file a return.
This is true whether or not you are being claimed as a dependent on another return because your income is considered to be self-employment.
