You can make an adjustment on your 2020 tax return for stimulus payments you qualify for, but have not received.

To do this in TurboTax, please follow these steps:

  1. Enter the information in your return.
  2. Click Federal Review at the top of your screen.
  3. On the screen, Let's make sure you got the right stimulus amount, click Continue.
  4. You will be asked about the amounts of first round and second round stimulus payments you received
  5. TurboTax will then calculate the amount of stimulus payment remaining that you are still entitled to.  This will show as a credit on line 30 of the 1040.

Yes, less than $200!  This was based off of 2019.  I was covid unemployed in 2020 and got the low-ball stimulus before I submitted 2020 taxes.  Do I amend to get the rest, or do I have to wait until next year to get it?

@TC6872 It is common for the IRS to send a reduced stimulus check. Normally, you will get the balance within  a few weeks of when you received the first payment.

If you entered the correct information on your 2020 tax return, it will do no good to amend it since it was correct to begin with.  Otherwise, you can amend it.

@TC6872 - not following you post...can you please explain more after reading my comments below?

What is on Line 30 of your tax return?

you are entitled to the GREATER of

  • the two stimulus payments you received previously  OR
  • what the 'recovery credit' calculates to based on your 2020 income and dependents

if the 2nd bullet is greater than the 1st bullet, the difference will post on Line 30 of the tax form and increase your refund / reduce what you are owed,

if it is the other way around, you are not due any more and Line 30 will be zero.  You are not required to return any money either, so Line 30 can never be negative.
