dependent who is not a dependent

I listed my grandsons domestic partner (23 yo) as a dependent when I helped him with his taxes. Since they are not related, she doesn't impact taxes in either direction.   Since the stimulus rules came out, it seems that dependents will not receive the $1200.  I reviewed the filed forms and in some places it says she is not a dependent.  My questions are:  Will she receive the $1200 or do i need to amend his return (he has already received his refund and removing her will not change anything) to remove her?  She could then file the short form the IRS talked about yesterday.

thank you

You are correct, dependents do not receive a stimulus payment.  If your grandson's tax return claimed his domestic partner as a dependent, there should have been a $500 credit for the Credit for Other Dependents.  If so, that would have to be paid back if his return is amended to not claim her.  An amended return can be filed, but it will have to be printed and mailed.  The processing time for amended returns is usually six - eight weeks.  She may not be able to file the short form you refer to, since a return has already been filed with her on it.
