I have a question. On the Deductions And Credits page it compares last year to this year. Last year it shows an amount for Vehicle Registration Fees. This year I entered the amount in the correct place for Vehicle Registration Fees, but under 2022 it shows $0.00. I don't understand why this is happening.
Can you clarify if you entered all your itemized deductions? It is possible if TurboTax has the standard deduction because it gives you a better tax break, it may not appear until you reach the amount for itemizing.
I believe it went with the Standard Deduction (It has 28,7000). For 2021 it has 27,050.00 as the Standard Deduction. I am fairly certain that last year I took the standard deduction as well though.
Yes 28,700 is the Standard Deduction for Joint with both spouses over 65.
I had the exact same question. But I got my call disconnected by TurboTax 3 times asking.
That isn't good. I know that it won't make a huge difference in what I owe, but I should get the deduction, as the program help file still lists my state as being able to do that, and I lived in the same state in 2021
I would like to take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the directions below:
Mary,
To add to my reply, for the comparison 2021 shows the Standard Deduction, a line for Student Loan Interest, a line for Motor Vehicle Registration Fees, and a line for State and Local Taxes > $10,000 and then has the total of the lines. The total equals the Standard Deduction + the Student Loan Interest + the Motor Vehicle Registration Fees. (The State and Local Taxes > entry is 0. But under the 2022 column even though there was an amount entered under the Motor Vehicle Registration Fees when going through the entry process, it shows $0!!!
If you look at the 2021-2022 comparison, you will see they included the $960 in the State and Local taxes greater than $10,000, whereas for 2021 it is listed on the separate line. In neither case does the number affect your total deductions because you took the Standard dedution.
So for comparison, I added enough to the mortgage interest to force the Itemized deduction and look what happened. I will pull out TurboTax 2021 and look for more information.
@MaryK4so do you think then that there is a problem, or is what TurboTax is telling me correct and what it says I owe/or get as a refund is accurate?
No because you are not itemizing it will not affect your taxes, but please keep an eye here, I'll tag you after I plug the numbers into 2021 to be sure. @DWO12
@MaryK4did you ever plug the numbers into the previous year? I haven't seen anything here
