Cost of Efiling State returns

I paid $105 to purchase TurboTax Desktop Premier Tax Year 2022 Win Download with State.  This gave me 5 federal returns and 1 state return.  I then purchased TurboTax Desktop NY tax year 2022 with download and TurboTax Desktop NJ Tax Year 2022 with download at a cost of $45 each.  I am now filing a federal return, a NY return and a NJ return for my daughter and TurboTax is charging me an extra $25.  Are you kidding me??  What did the $45 cover??

The $45 was for the software program to prepare a NJ return.  With the CD/download software there is always--always--always--an extra fee to e-file a state return --with the exception of a NY state return.  So there is a $25 fee to e-file the NJ return.  You can avoid that fee if you print and mail the NJ return instead of e-filing it.

We all get one free state download and have to pay $25 to eFile each state return.  You should have been charged $45 for the second State download $50 for two State eFiles.  I am surprised that you were unaware of that, as it was clear to me when I first purchased the software many years ago.  I was doing my sister-in-laws taxes in a different state (happened to be New York) and I went online to the New York State tax website to file her return.  It was free and pretty easy to complete.

I live in NJ. I need to file 2 NJ tax returns. If I e-file, is it $25 per return for a total of $50 or would it be $25 to file both returns?

@Myangelk Each state return that you e-file will cost $25.  Do not fall into the trap of saying you will pay the $50 out of a federal refund or you will also pay another extra fee for "refund processing" that will cost you $39.

You can print, sign and mail the state returns to avoid the state e-file fee.

.....it will be $25 for each separate NJ e-file.

_______

or...print them and mail-file them for free (ignoring postage and paper)...but that has it's own issues with delayed manual processing that could take months.

The $25 e-file fee for a state tax return is for each state tax return e-filed.  This cost can be avoided by printing and mailing the state tax returns.

@Louie17 I ran into the same thing.  I was being charged $45 dollars.  When I changed to filing Federal electronically and my state return by mail, i was not charge anything.  I know others where charged $25 for state so I am not sure why I got the $45 charge.  Decided it wasn't work the effort to investigate and will just mail my state return.

@jffeliciano Sounds like you are in CA.   If you are in CA, and if you choose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, the refund processing---aka "Premium Services" costs you an extra $45.
