Claiming Expenses

Me and my wife are US Citizens, my mother-in-law who is not a US citizen (came to USA on visiting visa)  stayed with us for 6 months to help my wife post pregnancy.  Can we claim her expenses on our tax returns.

No, you can not claim her expenses on your tax return, but you may be able to claim her as a dependent which would give you a break on your taxes.

You are able to claim someone as a qualifying relative as long as they are a Canadian or Mexican resident.

Here is a TurboTax Help article that will help you determine if your mother-in-law can be claimed on your tax return.
