Changing my filing status post divorce

I was married for 20 years and my divorce was finalized April 2024. When I began my taxes this year, Turbo Tax automatically entered all of my ex-spouse's information from last year assuming I am still married. How can I remove him from my taxes? I have not filed yet because I am having trouble with this.

Your best action would be to start a completely new return. Trying to clean up a 2024 joint tax file and change the filing status is difficult. If you leave something that should have been deleted or changed, you'll end up having problems. If the 2023 return has carryovers to 2024, there are rules as to what can be used by each divorced party.

If you used Turbo Tax last year you should start a brand new account for yourself and not transfer from last year.  You can't remove a spouse especially if he was listed first on the return.

Online is only good for 1 return. But you can use the same email address for 5 accounts. Start another Online return here. Sign up and start a new account.
