Caregiver

I was my wife’s primary caregiver the last four months of her life. I was working 24 hours a week before this event. I went down to 8 hours a week while taking care of her. She was getting social security each month. She was getting $1131 a month. Do I qualify for any deduction for this.

Hi LesGrace!

As a spouse, there isn't any particular benefit that you'd receive when caring for your wife. If you are at least age 62, and have worked and qualified for your own Social Security benefit, it may very well be that you could receive higher than 50% of your spouse’s full benefit.

I’m 66and receive a railroad retirement benefit of $1785 a month and cannot receive any of her social security benefit because it is paid through the railroad.
