can't delete adopted child

I've looked through the forums and nothing seems to be able to answer my problem. I somehow wound up with "adoptive child" for 2019 even though my kids were adopted in 2014. When I go to adoptive child info, there's nothing under name, etc. when I go to delete with the little trash can, and click yes for "are you sure you want to delete this adoptive child?" and then click done it says' it's removed but then when I try to review my taxes prior to submitting, it takes me back to adoptive child worksheet which I don't think I need to do. I can't get past this one point.

Try deleting the Adoption Credit information.  See How to get out of the adoption credit?

I've done that about 6 times. It keeps popping back up when I go to review taxes before submitting.

I suggest you go to the adoption credit section and add a child for adoption. Then, go back and delete the entry. Sometimes this will clear everything out.

That still didn't work and I really don't want to have to start all over with filling in my taxes.

Try deleting the forms.

1.  Click "Tax Tools" in the left hand menu

2.  Click "Tools" in the left hand menu

3.  Click "Delete a Form" in the center screen

4.  Scroll down to form 8839, "Delete"

5.  The adoptive child worksheet, "Delete"

6.  The adoptive carryover wksht, "Delete"

There was no 8839 form in the list. The only one related to adoption was the adoption carryover worksheet. I deleted that, it said deletion successful but then loops back to the list of forms to delete and it's still there. Tried several times.

Still shows worksheet to reviewwhen I try to review my taxes.
I'm about to find some other online tax filing service. This is ridiculous. I've used Turbo Tax since 2015 with no issues till now.

It appears there is some carryover from prior years. I assume you are getting the error during "Smart Check"  review.  When it comes up what is it asking you to do or pointing out for you?  Can you copy/paste the error message?

When I go to review all the tax information it takes me to  this and It wants me to fill out this but this form is not in the list of forms to delete.  I've deleted every thing I can.

It sounds like you may have an erroneous blank entry under one of your children.  I'd like you to check in PERSONAL INFO and go through each of your children.  The hint was that it is looking for a last name.  I'm sure you posted the children correctly, but a blank one may have been added by mistake.

Everything's filled out correctly and fully. I really don't want to have to use another tax prep site but that's where I'm headed soon if I can't figure this out.

I'm in the same situation. Some other form must be feeding info back into the adoption carryover form and causing it to regenerate.  It's driving me crazy.  Turbotax needs to address this!

I live overseas and have to efile as I can't file by mail.  It won't let me efile until I fix this error, but there is no way to fix it! Super frustrating!

I can't not delete the 8839 form so I can file my taxes.  I keep trying and it says it is deleted but then comes back.

It is a good idea to first clear your cache and cookies - which means removing all of the temporary programs that can gum up your web browser.  If that doesn't work, try using a different web browser.

Here is a link on how to clear your cache and cookies.

If that doesn't work I would recommend phoning TurboTax to ask for help.

Do you have a carryforward of an unused adoption credit form 8839?   If so deleting the form will remove it permanently.  That form will not be functional until 3/3 ... I would wait if I had a credit to use up.  See the chart here:

I tried deleting all the adoption forms over and over again and they kept popping back up.

What WORKED is that I deleted the forms, logged out of Turbotax (by hitting the button on the bottom left of the screen), and then logged back in. The Adoption Credit line was gone after that.

I hope that works for ya'll!

Are you sure you don't have a carryover from a prior tax year to use up ?   Did you try deleting the kids on the return and the adoption form then rebooting your computer & clearing your cookies ?

I do have a carry over as I’ve never filed on the adoption from 2019. I don’t have the form they are asking for. I have not tried deleting the child yet, I have deleted the adoption forms they won’t delete.
