Box 'd' control number

I'm filling information about my W2 in the turbo tax app,  it is asking for my box'd' control number and is giving me an example on how that number will look like, but to me, in my W2 form, the box d is my SSN so not sure what does that control number refer to?

Hi @Cassandradlfc !

It appears that your employer may have used your SSN as the control number.  Have you tried to go ahead and enter it in TurboTax?

Thanks,

Cindy

Or....just leave box D blank.   You are not required to put anything in box D.   Using your SSN there might just end up causing errors for you when you try to e-file.

Using the control number will populate the data from your W-2 into TurboTax, if it is made available by the employer.

It seems you're right, they used XXX-XX-last digits of my SSN, the problem is that the digits of my SSN are incorrect in my W2 form, I asked them to update my information but my question will be, can I add the correct last 4 digits of my real SSN in turbo tax app even though that number is not correct in my W2 form? or I need to wait for them to update my info?

Your correct SSN is already pre-populating from the information you entered in the personal information section, but be sure your employer does issue the corrected W-2, so that your social security account will get the proper credit, and your withholdings will be on record with the IRS.
