Hello,
I am currently a resident of California and have a W2 job here. However, I also have a part-time, remote W2 position in Missouri. Since this job in Missouri is remote and I don't have any state taxes withheld, I don't have to file a Missouri state tax return. However, I didn't realize this in 2021 and 2022 when I filed my taxes with Turbo Tax. I had the same residency situation in those years too.
How can I go about amending my previous years tax returns so that I can be refunded the Missouri state tax I paid?
Also, is it correct that I only need to amend the Missouri tax return and not the federal or California state tax returns? Would amending the Missouri return impact the California state return?
Thank you.
Would amending the Missouri return impact the California state return?
Yes, you loose the credit CA gave you for paying MO taxes.
As @ee-ea states if you amend your MO returns to claim a refund of MO taxes withheld you would also need to amend your CA returns to delete the credit for taxes paid to another state. You would then have to pay CA those back taxes plus interest and late fees.
If you still want to amend those prior year state returns here is a link that will help.
