5-digit field for 6-digit PIN

Because my SSN was used to submit a fraudulent claim several years ago, the IRS has issued me an IP PIN each year. This year, however, the PIN I received is 6 digits, but the TurboTax field allows only 5 digits. When I called TurboTax support, I was told I have to submit my returns via paper via the USPS. What a major hassle, Intuit people. Can't you change the field to allow 6 digits? There's still time for the 2019 tax year, correct, since most deadlines were pushed back because of COVID?

I have a 6 digit PIN but there is only room for 5 digits.  How can I fix this?

The 6 digit Identity Protection PIN is not entered in the section for filing a 2019 tax return.

To enter a 6 digit IP PIN

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Other Tax Situations
  • Scroll down to Other Return Info
  • On Identity Protection PIN, click the start button

Or enter ip pin in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to ip pin

Unfortunately, in Turbotax 2020 latest release October 2021, Turbotax still hasn't fixed this.

There was not an issue in this regard that needs fixing.   This is a thread from last year, and the 2 users above were not going to the correct screen, and I suspect that's your situation, too.

Without any description of your issue, we're having to guess a bit.   If your issue is the same as the title of this thread, it sounds like you are trying to enter a 6-digit IP PIN (Identity Protection PIN) in the wrong place.

The IP PIN is NOT entered in the filing section.   It is entered in a different section of TurboTax and clearly has an entry field allowing the 6 digits.   The 5-digit PIN field you encounter in the filing section is for something different.

Also, we don't know for sure if you are using Online TurboTax or desktop software (CD/download).  However, since you said "latest release", I'll assume that means you are using the desktop software.    Follow these navigation steps:

Federal Taxes tab (Personal tab if using Home and Business Edition.)

Subtab Other Tax Situations.

Scroll down to category Other Return Info.

Select Identity Protection PIN and click Start.

You should then see the following screen:

This solution absolutely fixed my issue.

Running Turbotax 2021 CD version (desktop).  Ran all updates.

Issue: Getting rejected federal and state returns with emailed error IND-031-04 within 45 minutes of submission.  Instructions to correct on the turbotax side are vague and inaccurate.  The question in the software right before efiling only asks for a 5 digit pin ("You can make up any number") and makes no reference to the 6 digit pin generated by the IRS.

I tried my 5 digit PIN from last year and confirmed my AGI was correct on my turbotax online version and IRS site.   Upon resubmit, I again received a rejected return email.  Another submit with a fresh 5 digit PIN also got rejected.

Cause of the issue: I chose to 'explore on my own' vs 'guide me' when originally launching the software.  I missed the part about 'Did you or any of your dependents receive an IP PIN from the IRS for this year's taxes'.  We did.  This is a 6 digit PIN.  Filling out that section manually as described by mesquitebean has resolved my situation and my returns have been accepted.

Thank you to mesquitebean for the solution.

You're welcome.  Good luck.

I came across this problem with TurboTax Home and Business 2023.  I went back and put the IP PIN in the section under "Other Tax Situations", however when I review the return, it is still asking me to put in a self-selected 5-digit number.  How do I get through this and file the return electronically?

You can put any number for the 5-digit Efile PIN.  You don't have to remember it, and you won't be asked for it next year.

Here's more info on the Self-Select PIN.
