2019 turbotax data file - where is it??

I prepared my personal fed/state returns 2 months ago, and wanted to finish  them now.  I just opened Turbotax, and after a long, mandatory update, the program opened and asked if I wanted to BEGIN my returns.

Last time I opened the program, it of course showed the return I had prepared.  I cannot figure out how to get Turbo tax to find the data file for my 2019 returns, and apparently it can't find them either. What do I do now?  I do not want to prepare the returns all over again.

Of course - saved and saved often.  It always showed up when I  restarted the software, up until I installed this last update.

btw, I should NOT have to save a file!! If data has been input, tax calculated, etc., TT should know to keep the datafile.

Anyway, I can't find it now. I think I'm screwed and will have to reenter it all.

Online TurboTax autosaves  --  desktop does not "know" to save unless you save it, so I had to ask.

You can try calling customer support to see if they can help you recover the file--maybe it's buried there somewhere.

Where are the TT data files supposed to be saved?  I assumed they would be in the Programs/Turbotax directories

Hi LWSOLOM,

All of my TT files have the year and name first as file name.

Try "SEARCH" with 2019 and look for your TT file there.

I just had to do the very same thing this AM, and I found my file in the download directory - instead of the TT directory.

Good luck

By default, TurboTax files are located on your C: drive [unless you have changed your settings] at this address:

C:\Users\your name\Documents\TurboTax

The files have an extension ".tax[YEAR]," for example, .tax2020, .tax2019, etc.  You can search your hard drive for TurboTax files by putting an asterisk in front of the extension:  *.tax2019.  This should find all your 2019 TurboTax files.

I believe we used the same naming convention back n 1999 Search your C drive for *.tax1999 files.  It that doesn't work, try *.tax99

@ravensnow123

You have to access your own account and/or  print it for yourself using exactly the same account and user ID that you used when you prepared the return.

Many people have multiple TT accounts and forget how to access them.  Log out of the account you are in now.

Or did you use the desktop version of TurboTax?  If so, the files are on your own hard drive or any backup device you used like a flash drive.

I have a desktop that says I last worked on it on 11/20/22, but I am sure I worked on it in December.  However, my memory is not good.  I guess it's possible that I didn't work on it since 11/20.

@jazzkool   Do you have a question?  Can you open it?  I assume you are using the Desktop program for 2022?  Or for a prior year?

To access your prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

Start the 2023 online tax return by entering some personal information then click on Tax Home on the left side of the screen.

On the Tax Home webpage -

Scroll down to the section Your tax returns & documents.  Click on the Year and Click on Download/print return (PDF)

On the next screen labeled Download your past TurboTax returns click on the link

Intuit Privacy

.  On the next screen you can download the PDF of the tax year you selected.

If you used the desktop CD/Download editions installed on your computer, the only copy of your tax data file and any PDF's will be on the computer where the return was created.  TurboTax does not store online any returns completed using the desktop editions.

Or go to this IRS website for free federal tax return transcripts - https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript

For a fee of $43 you can get a complete federal tax return from the IRS by completing Form 4506 - http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506.pdf
