1099

My wife is a teacher. She was W-2. I work at trader Joe's. I'm also W-2. I also do refereeing for high school sports that is a 1099. Am I supposed to file completely jointly with a 1099?

You and your wife can file a Married filing Jointly return.   Enter both w-2s, making sure to indicate who each form belongs to.   Then you will add a Schedule C to your return for your 1099.   That is self-employment income and gets reported on Schedule C, which is a business schedule.

You can use your name and home address for the business, but the Schedule belongs to you and will be part of your jointly filed return.

I need to enter a 1099 - Am I Self-Employed?   As a self-employed coach, umpire, or referee, here are some additional expenses you can deduct:

  • Tools, supplies, and equipment (whistles, balls, cones, first aid kit, clipboard, etc.)
  • Uniforms or gear not suitable for everyday wear, such as helmets, masks, skates, and chest protectors
  • CPR certification and first aid training
  • Coach’s clinics, workshops, and specialized training
  • Travel expenses such as airfare, auto rental, and lodging (plus meals, if you have to be away overnight)
  • Business portion of mobile phones, data plans, or a second phone line
  • Vehicle expenses or standard mileage
  • Advertising, including websites
  • Licenses, permits, fees, and membership dues

How do I report income from self-employment?

What self-employed expenses can I deduct?

Yes.  All of your combined income goes on the same joint Form 1040.

If you have self-employment income for which you will pay self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare,  you will need to use online Premium software or any version of the desktop software download so that you can prepare a Schedule C for your business expenses.

If you live in a state with a state income tax, you might need to make estimated payments to your state.
