1099-R

Dear reader

December 31-2023 was my last day working in the US. Since then (January 1 2024) I have moved and work in the Netherlands.

I made arrangements in December 2023 to cash out my 401K, wich I recoved mid January 2024) and will most probably receive a 1099-R form to pay taxes/penalty on my 401K for the year 2024.

Since I no longer work in the US and no longer am a resident alien (gave up my green card) will I need to:

a. change my address to my address in the Netherlands?

b. Report my marital status? (I got married last August 2024)

c. Report my dutch income?

d. I still have a US accounts. Do I need to provide details of my US accounts?

I am trying to get ahead of what I need to do in turbotax.

Any suggestions how to best deal with my taxes?

Since you're a non-resident alien (NRA) in the eyes of the IRS, you should file a 1040-NR and report your U.S. source income.  See IRS Publication 519, About Publication 519, U.S. Tax Guide for Aliens | Internal Revenue Service

You may also take a look at the U.S.-Netherland Tax Treaty and see if there are any special treatments:

Netherlands - Tax treaty documents | Internal Revenue Service

In general, NRAs do not file joint tax returns with their spouse.  You will most likely be better off doing "married, filing separately" to report only your U.S. source income.   Yes, use your Netherland address on your 2024 1040-NR.

Let me know if need help.  I may be able to refer you to an Enrolled Agent in Switzerland who specializes in ex-pat U.S. tax filings.

Her name is Rebecca R and her website is[removed] email address is [email address removed]

I "met" Rebecca at a professional tax software forum for Lacerte.  Intuit bought Lacerte many years ago.  Rebecca was quite active at one time, answering all of our international tax questions.  She's extremely knowledgeable.

Good luck!
