1099-R boxes 1 and 2a

I received a 1099-R and it has an amount listed in box 1 for gross distribution.

Box 2a has the word"UNKNOWN" for Taxable Amount.

TT asks for a number to enter into TT and will not accept characters.

So, I left box 2a blank, but Later in the TT program is asks about the ) taxable retirement amount and wants to review these same 2 boxes on my 1099-R.

Not sure how to enter the wording UNKNOWN into box 2a or why TT is assuming that my income from the 1099-R is untaxable?

Delimmna?

If your 1099-R has UNKNOWN as the taxable amount, you probably have a CSA 1099-R.

Be sure to pick the correct 1099-R type: Standard 1099-R, CSA-1099-R, CSF-1099-R, RRB-1099-R.

After you enter the 1099R in the screen, turbo tax will ask additional questions about your 1099R to determine how much of that distribution is taxable.

Either way, if Box 2a reads unknown, leave it blank and TurboTax will provide you with follow-up questions.
