1099-NEC boxes 5-7 state info

Hi,

I received an 1099-NEC from my employer.

Box 5 is left blank

Box 6 says "AZ" (no state number)

Box 7 has the same $ amount as box 1.

When filling out my form with the information I have for boxes 6 and 7, turbo tax won't let me continue without putting something in boxes 5 and 6 for state number.

Pleas help, not sur what to do.

If your 1099-NEC has Box 5 left blank, Box 6 with "AZ" but no state number, and Box 7 with the same amount as Box 1, here's what each box represents and how to handle the situation in TurboTax:

  • Box 5: This box shows any state income tax withheld. If it's blank, it means no state tax was withheld
  • Box 6: This box is for the state identification number. If it's blank, you can use the Payer's TIN (Tax Identification Number) located under the Payer's name on the form
  • Box 7: This box shows the state income, which is the amount of nonemployee compensation subject to state tax. It often matches the amount in Box 1

To proceed in TurboTax:

  1. Leave Boxes Blank: If no state tax was withheld (Box 5 is blank), leave Boxes 6, and 7 empty

It would be really nice if the software would tell you this or just proceed with ignoring the info you did input after some sort of confirmation that the fields left blank were done so intentionally.

Well said. This is unnecessarily confusing and misleading on Turbotax's part.
