1095-A dependent minor child

  • My child was on my partners insurance as a dependent and I got mine through work. My partner received his form 1095 A , but is not claiming our child on his taxes. I will be claiming him on my taxes , but the 1095-A form shows the policy holder as my child’s father. My child is only 1. How do I go about entering this on my taxes? Do I enter my child’s as the policy holder? Can I even claim my child on my taxes as a dependent with this issue?

You can claim your child as your dependent as long as they meet the requirements below;

  •
  • The child must be related to you.
  • The child can’t be claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • The child must be a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • If the child is married, they can’t file a joint return with their spouse.
  • The child must be under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
    • No age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.
  • The child must have lived with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).
  • The child didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year.

Since your child has insurance on a shared Marketplace policy, both you and your partner need to enter a copy of the Form 1095-A. TurboTax will ask you questions about if the policy was shared with someone and how to allocate the costs and credit.

The percentages that you should enter for your premium, your SLCSP, and your advance payment should be an amount that you and your partner agree on. It could be 50/50, 100/0, or another amount. Make sure you are in agreement and that the percentages on both tax returns add up to 100% together. TurboTax will calculate the information that should be on your return based on your answers.
