1040SR

Just filed and your software automatically filed for me with 1040 SR. I am 69 but my wife is 63 and I've been told both spouses ahve to be 65. Is that true?

Compare the Form 1040 and the Form 1040SR with each other.  The lines are the same.  The calculations will be done exactly the same way.  The difference is the 1040SR has larger print.  There is no effect whatsoever on your tax due or refund amount.

TT automatically printed for 1040-SR.  This has never happened before and my husband and I have been "seniors" for many years.  If the size of type is the only difference, can we choose 1040 instead?  It would save ink and paper!

If it already printed out on Form 1040SR, how would you save ink and paper by printing it again on Form 1040?

The 1040SR is new this year for 2019.  If you have the Desktop program you can force it to print 1040 or 1040SR.

Well, if I print it once, to mail, then I print a copy for me.  In addition, each state wants a copy of the Federal return, so it is a lot of copies!  I prefer paper copies rather than email.  I realize this is a lot of ink and paper... but having a paper copy saved my bacon with the IRS awhile back, so I stick with that.  Also, with the 1040 form rather than the 1040 SR I can compare line by line with last year's taxes to see differences much easier.

How can I "force" it to print 1040 instead?

If you use the Desktop program you can switch to forms and the Info Wks part II has a selection for 1040 or 1040SR.

And please let us know if you find any difference by printing both ways.  And if you think you are saving very much.  You will still print 2 pages unless you are printing 2 sided.

If you want to compare to 2018 it won't help to print either way.  All the 1040 lines have changed again from 2018 to 2019.  And instead of 6 extra schedules that were new in 2018 now there are just 3 schedules.

Did you look at the blank IRS forms to see the differences?

Thank you.  I tried that, but even changing to forms and selecting only 1040, my program still gave me the 1040SR.  Thanks for your help.  I want to be finished with this, so I will live with what the program gives me for now.

Easier to read with the 1040.  And, I believe it might save a little ink.  Maybe not.  I like to compare my 1040 each year with the previous year to see what changes there are, etc.  having the print the same size makes it much easier.  Even though some parts of the forms change a little.

Thank you so much for showing me the form and where to indicate my print choice.  Curious that the interview did not ask that question...

I know.  And you can only pick it in the Desktop program using forms.  If one spouse is 65 or older Turbo Tax automatically gives you the 1040SR.

Do not want to use 1040SR.  How can I force turbo tax to print form 1040?

The 1040SR is the same as the regular 1040 just larger type and the Standard Deduction chart is added to the bottom of page 1. But it has the same line numbers. You automatically get the SR if you or your spouse is 65 or older. If you really want to use the regular 1040 in the Online version, you can print your return and copy the amounts into a blank 1040 (link below) from the 1040SR.

If you are using the Desktop program there is a way to force the one you want, switch to Forms and the Info Wks part II has a selection for 1040 or 1040SR. If you look at it in Forms Mode it shows the 1040 but if you print it out it will be the 1040SR.

Even the regular 2019 1040 return is now different than 2018. They changed the line numbers again and reduced the schedules from 6 to 3.

You can compare them,
