What is e-file reject IND-526?

SOLVEDby TurboTax179Updated January 29, 2024

E-file reject IND-526 happens when the date of birth for the second person listed on the return is either incorrect or doesn't match IRS records.

First, get a copy of your 2023 Form 1040 and find the second person listed. Then, find an official document like a birth certificate, passport, or driver's license, to ensure you have the correct date.

Select your version of TurboTax for instructions, and be sure to enter the date in the standard U.S. format of MM/DD/YYYY.

  1. Sign in to TurboTax and select Fix my return.
  2. On the Let's fix your return and then refile screen, select Fix it Now.
  3. Verify the second person's date of birth on the next screen.
    • If the date listed is correct, select Yes, that is the correct date of birth and Continue. We'll guide you through printing and mailing your return as you won't be able to e-file.
    • If the date listed is incorrect, select No, I need to make changes and Continue. Enter the correct date of birth on the next screen in MM/DD/YYYY format and Continue.
  4. Follow the screens to continue and refile your return.
  1. Open TurboTax and select Fix my return.
  2. On the Welcome back to TurboTax screen, select Fix it now.
  3. Follow the instructions to verify the second person's date of birth.
  4. Continue following the instructions to refile the return.

To fix this rejection, you'll need to leave the TurboTax app and sign in to a browser:

  1. Sign out of the app by tapping the menu icon, then select Sign Out.
  2. Open your browser (either on your device or a computer) and sign in at MyTurboTax.com (use your app login).
  3. Fix and refile your return in TurboTax Online using the previous instructions.

Most likely, the IRS has the wrong date of birth on file. In this scenario, you won't be able to e-file, because the date you're entering doesn't match their records.

Keep following the instructions and we'll help you file your return by mail.

Note: To prevent this rejection next year, call the Social Security Administration (SSA) at 1-800-772-1213 to verify their records (this is where the IRS database pulls from). If the info is wrong, please allow 4 to 6 weeks for correction.
