refunds

what can I do to speed up my refund?

I always use Turbotax to do my return, but last year I needed to include a statement of my investments from UBS and needed to mail my return.  I mailed last years’ tax return on April 10, 2021 at 5:55 PM.  There was an estimated delivery date of April 13, 2021.

I received a letter from the IRS (dated 9/17/2021) requesting more information (Reference number [phone number removed]).  I mailed that information back to the IRS on 9/26/2021.

I still have not gotten my refund of a few thousand dollars!

There is nothing you can do to speed up the IRS, as millions of people who are still waiting for their refunds have already learned.  The IRS is severely backlogged.  Anything that requires human attention is taking a very long time.   If you provided the information that the IRS requested, you just have to wait for the IRS to process your return and issue your refund.  Your only source of information is the IRS.  TurboTax gets no information after you file your tax return, nor can TT speed up the process for you.

Hello jmew,

Thank you for participating in our Ask The Experts event. As to your question, I understand your frustration in not receiving your refund or more communication for a year from the IRS. Unfortunately, when dealing with the IRS, we are at their pace and mercy. I'm not sure what else, if anything, you may have tried but here are some suggestions:

Please know that you are not alone in this issue. We have many customers calling who have also been waiting for over a year. As you may know, the IRS is dealing with a seemingly insurmountable backlog of paper filings, but hopefully one of the approaches listed above will help you.

Good luck.
