Work-related expenses

I worked for the U.S. Census last year as a Census Field Supervisor. Toward the end, they wanted me to be creative to find get the information we needed. I paid to access a county assessor to get homeowner contact info and whitepages.com for phone numbers. However, the Census was not willing to reimburse me. When I put the expenses into TT, it says maybe I can claim this money on my state taxes. ???? It was a federal job.

Anyway I can recoup this money? It was $140!😖

It is doubtful that you will be able to recoup that money.

Employee business expenses entered on Form 2106 is the place that the out-of-pocket expense would normally have been claimed.  This deduction was suspended by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act in 2017 for tax years 2018 through 2025.  However, some states did not conform to this Federal change.  That is the reason that TurboTax is suggesting that it could be a state deduction.  If you have entered the information and your state happens to be one that did not conform to the change, then the information will be carried to your state return.
