Wages & Income: W-2 error in block 14 code K

Wages & Income: W-2 error in block 14 code K should be: “K - Pretax Vision and Dental Deduction”

according to the Employee W-2 form.

And NOT:

“K – 20% excise tax – golden parachute” which in the 2022 Turbo tax program.

Sound like a business issue with the Employer and not the employees' income?

The drop down menu that you have clicked on is for Box 12.  The amounts in Box 12 are directly related to income and are most often carried by the program to the forms where they belong automatically.

Box 14 is different.  It tends to be informational, just there to tell the employee what was taken out of their check and not for use on their tax return.  If it does need to be entered in to the tax return somewhere box 14 amounts usually have to be manually entered into the TurboTax program in any other areas where they belong.

When you get to Box 14 there is a space there that just says 'Description' and you will type in the information from your W2.  There is no drop down menu.

In the Mac version of Turbotax 2022,  there is a pull-down in block 14 with a programming error for code K and will add a 20% excise tax to increase the taxable waged income.

I just had this same issue TurboTax needs to fix this.  Now it won't let me amend until February 15!  Not happy!

We would like to take an in-depth look at this situation and submit more information to the development team if necessary or try to provide a solution for you.  It would help if we could use a diagnostic file of your tax return to be sure we are seeing the same thing you are.  The diagnostic file will not contain personally identifiable information, only numbers related to your tax forms.

If you wish to send a file, use the following instructions and then post the token number along with which version of TurboTax you are using and what state return you are filing in a follow-up thread.

Use these steps if you are using TurboTax Online:

  • Sign in to your account and be sure you are in your tax return.
  • Select Tax Tools in the menu to the left.
  • Select Tools.
  • Select Share my file with agent.
  • A pop-up message will appear, select OK to send the sanitized diagnostic copy to us.
  • Post the token number here.

If you are using a CD/downloaded version of TurboTax, use these steps:

  • Select Online at the top of the screen.
  • Select Send Tax File to Agent.
  • Click OK.
  • Post the token number here.
