Social security number starting with Zero

My ex-wife's social security number starts with a Zero and Turbo Tax keeps dropping the Zero and says SSN invalid.  How do I fix this?

Please try the following:

  1.  Using Chrome, clear your cookies & cache, and then open a new browser.  Log back into TurboTax and see if the wife's social security number displays normally.
  2. If this does not fix the issue, please check your IRS account to see if someone has filed a tax return with her social security number.  This could happen if she might be someone else's dependent, if someone made a mistake, or, unfortunately, it happened for fraudulent purposes.  This may not be the reason that the number is being rejected, but TurboTax will not be able to e-file when a social security number has already been used. It is important to rule it out, as this error is unusual.

Please let us know if neither one of these fix the problem.

This is my Ex.  so I can't look at her taxes...  I am using the stand-alone Turbo Tax not the on-line version.  I can clear my cache's but doubt if that would affect the stand-alone program.  I'll try it anyway....

Thisis my Ex and need to enter her SSN for alimony paid....

If you know the social security number is correct, try changing it, then changing it back (it's a trial to see if it works) to see if it makes any difference. Make sure to completely delete the field before you try to enter it again.

If the issue continues to persist you may have to file by mail as indicated.

Thanks, I tried that... I think the problem is that Turbo Tax is dropping the Zero..  her SSN starts with 027.....  I think it may be a bug!

It isn't a bug because many people have a SSN or EIN that begin with a zero.

TurboTax checks the name and SSN automatically before eFiling.  If the name and SSN do not match, the eFile will reject.  It is possible that your ex wife has changed her last name.

If you are unable to eFile then it would be best to file by paper.

Just playing around I entered my SSN and that worked.  So there is not a check to see if the name/SSN match at this point.  Sort of why I think there is a turbo tax issue..

I too have the same problem with the standalone version running on Windows.  This has worked for many years in Turbo Tax.  It's only this year that I've run into this.  If I replace the starting 0 with a 1, the entry is accepted even though this is not the correct SSN.

This is definitely a bug in TurboTax.

Update: After about 1-hour on the phone with support, nothing was resolved.  The problem was pushed up and I received a callback about a 1/2-hour later.  Support sent me a link for a manual update which fixed the problem after my computer was restarted.

Can you share the link for the update?

I also talked with support and they elevated it, but I did not get a callback.   I knew I couldn't be the only one with this... this has worked since at least 2011.
