NRA CD interest

Hi,

I am an international student on a fellowship in the USA, and am making interest from CD products. I do not have to pay any tax since I am NRA, but I could not include the 1042 form in my tax return since I received it late from the bank.

Would I have to amend my tax return or is it alright for now?

As a NRA, you will need to file a 1040NR, not a 1040. TurboTax does not support the 1040NR, but our partner Sprintax does and can help with your non resident return.

If you originally filed a form 1040, they can also help you with the process of correcting which form you filed.

I already filed 1040NR, without attaching the 1042-S documents from the bank. Since I am NRA I do not have to pay taxes. Do I need to refile 1040NR with the 1042-S documents from the bank attached?

I generated 1040NR both with and without the interest income and they look the same to me.

Please check with Sprintax or whomever you filed your 1040NR with.
