Medical Expense

I have about $50,000 AGI, and about $70,000 of medical expenses.

Why does TurboTax insist on using the standard deduction for me, saying it is better than itemizing?

Here's the TurboTax message:

Your $70,402 medical expense deduction doesn't count yet because your tax due already includes the best tax break, which is the $27,400 Standard Deduction.

I just want to be sure that this $70,000 was not reimbursed by insurance or paid by an HSA, but was all paid out of pocket with after-tax dollars.

Do you have the CD/download software or have already paid for the Online product?

If so, then you can go look for the Medical Worksheet, to see what TurboTax did with your entries. At the same time, you can look at Schedule A, if it's there for more information.

Oh, and did you at any point indicate that you wanted to use the Standard Deduction?
