Itemizing

I have two questions on Itemization:

1. In 2022, I replaced the exterior windows and roof on my main home with materials that qualify for an energy tax deduction.  I did not make home improvements in prior years so there were no carryover credits from a previous year.   However, when completing all the fields on this topic, TurboTax responded with a Home Energy Credit of $0.  What may I have done wrong to not qualify for a deduction?

2. In 2022, my computer was captured by ransomware. I was forced to pay $5000 to get control of my bank account back on my laptop. Can this expense be claimed in TurboTax? And, if so, what is the procedure for making the claim?

Thanks,

wdstrak

for #1 since we can't see your return or entries look at form 5695 lines 18 through 30

for #2 this is a non-deductible personal expense unless you are self-employed and used the computer in your business. did you check to see if either your renter's insurance or homeowner's insurance would cover any of the loss?

The Home Energy Credit seems to be working.  It is a nonrefundable credit which means that if your tax liability is already at zero then there is no credit to use in 2022. If this should be the case then you will have a carry forward for 2023.

Please review your Form 1040 in the credits section view the credit.
