HSA excess contribution error

Hello,

I am receiving an excess contribution error for my HSA.

HSA is in my name- my husbands employer contributed 1500 and we contributed 5600 (covered under family HDHP plan)

The question after his W2 asks whos account it is put in - i said 1500 to my account and 0 to him.,

One the questions about other contributions to the account ask how much we contributed- I entered 5600 and it states I contributed 5600 in excess.

I know this isn't correct but I'm not sure why this error is happening.

Thank you

when you enter his w-2 did you ever get to the question  did any of the HSA contributions go into your  spouse's account? must be answered yes. for his a/c enter 0 for your's enter 1500

in the HSA section. HSA for spouse should be checked

then enter the 5600 you made personally

make sure you answer yes to having a HDHP (even if through your husband)

make sure you answer you had a family plan every month of the year (the law says if either had family coverage you both had family coverage)

when it asks about your  husbands HDHP coverage select family

click continue  as needed to finish with HSA no amounts should be enter for him

you may end up with one 8889 for you and one for him - his should have no amounts other than possibly 0's

most likely you answered none to the question of being covered by an HDHP for the year

Answered yes for me and no for him. 1500 under me.

Answered yes to HDHP and yes to a family plan.

Still saying there was an excess contribution.

Got a little further- it somehow thought that both of us contributed 5700 to the account. i'm not sure how that happened but I changed it to say I didn't contribute and I think I fixed it.
