How do I switch to itemized deductions?

I clicked standard deduction by mistake. I want to itemize.

To itemize, search for itemized deductions, choosing in your TurboTax program. Be sure to use this exact term, including the comma and space.

Then, in the search results, click the "Jump to" link. This will take you straight to a screen where you can change your deduction.

Follow the steps below to change your decision about whether you want to itemized deductions (or have to use that method).

  1. Sign into your TurboTax account >  Click Tax Tools from the left-side menu.
  2. Select Tools from the drop-down menu.
  3. Click Topic Search, type Standard Deduction and click Go.
  4. On the next screen, Select change my deduction  at the bottom of the screen (see image below)

Due to the well documented screen resolutions / text scaling issues, I cannot get the search window to function. Please give me directions (e.g. which federal form and line number) where I can make the change directly.  Form 1040 line 12 seems like the obvious place but it's not.

Filing online

  1. With your tax return open, select Federal from the navigation menu on the left (if you're doing this on a mobile device, you'll probably need to scroll down).
  2. Now select Deductions & Credits near the top of your screen.
  3. Proceed through the screens, answering questions as necessary. Eventually you'll come to the screen Based on what you just told us, the Standard Deduction is best for you or Based on what you just told us, itemizing deductions is best for you.
  4. On that screen, select Change my deduction. You'll get a pop-up showing how much each deduction is worth.
  5. From here, you can either change your deduction by selecting it and continuing forward or cancel out.
    • Please note that if you're switching to the itemized deduction from Free Edition, you'll need to upgrade to Deluxe, as Free Edition doesn't handle Schedule A.

Tubo tax Home and bussiness version, personal computer, not online. This is the worst version I ever used. I always used itemized deduction, and it changed me to standard deduction. Please tell me step by step how to change it back to itemaized. I searched around, and can't find a solution working. I went to" Tools", "topic LIST", and found out nowhere to type in. Please help.

If using the desktop version of TurboTax, go to "Search Topics" box and enter "itemized deductions, choosing".

See the attached screenshots for aid in navigation:

Thank you so much for your response. However, there is no "topic search" menu on my turbo tax.  Please check the picture below

This should get you to it.

From the screenshot you posted...

  1. Select Deductions & Credits near the top of your screen.
  2. When asked how you want to enter your deductions and credits, click the button on the right, I'll choose what I work on.
  3. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the Your 2020 Deductions & Credits screen and click Done with Deductions.
  4. Continue through the interview until you see The Standard [or Itemized] Deduction is Right for You!
  5. On that screen, check the box Change my deduction to see the dollar amount for each deduction.
  6. Click Continue to apply any changes.

katvalek, thank you so much for your response.

It is so weird that my Turbo tax seems having different interfaces from others. It did not have the "topic search" option, and it did not have the option to change my deduction either. Please review my screen shot below.

Please let me know what else I can do. Turbo tax people, please help here.

Please ignor my last reply. I figured it out. Thanks a lot for all the help. I found out another serious issue with TT, and will start a new thread.

Can you show how this (switching from standard deduction to itemized deduction for the online turbotax version) should be done? I have exactly the same issue and trying to get phone support but could not get to a human (eventually got connected to one and then got put on hold for 15 minutes then just got disconnected by them).

I know this is the last minute (tomorrow is the deadline) but help please ...

Thank you!
