How do I choose standard deduction ?

The Standard Deduction for your filing status is automatically entered on your tax return unless you enter itemized deductions on Schedule A which are greater than your Standard Deduction.

 

Standard deductions for 2023

Single - $13,850 add $1,850 if age 65 or older
Married Filing Separately - $13,850 add $1,500 if age 65 or older
Married Filing Jointly - $27,700 add $1,500 for each spouse age 65 or older
Head of Household - $20,800 add $1,850 if age 65 or older

In TurboTax Online, you will answer the questions in the sections listed down the left side of the screen.

 

The sections are:

 

• My Info,
• Federal / Wages & Income and
• Federal / Deductions & Credits.

At the end of Deductions & Credits, you will see this screen.

 

 

If so, Continue on.

 

If, at the end of Deductions & Credits, you see that Itemized Deductions is right for you, you will want to select Change my deduction at the bottom of the screen.
