Form 8889

My husband and I are filing jointly.

In 2023, my husband over-contributed to an HSA account and we failed to withdraw the excess in 2024, so we're being taxed on that over-contribution. All good. We switched health coverage in mid-2023 and have not been on a HDHP since.

I'm trying to file my 2024 taxes now, but I keep getting an error form 8889 saying that I need to select coverage under an HDHP in 2024, but we didn't have HDHP coverage in 2024. What do I do?

You told TurboTax that you did not have HDHP coverage in 2024, so the numbers on the 8889 will be correct.

But TurboTax is confused on why you have entries in the HSA interview when you don't have any HDHP coverage. Of course, this is exactly the situation you are in.

The workaround in the Review is to just select Self when you are asked about what type of HDHP coverage you have (you could enter Family if you want, it won't make any difference),

This will get you around this hang-up in the Review and let you continue in your return.
