Form 8889

I am getting the following error when attempting to complete my HSA/Deductions, "Form 8889-T: Line 12 Wks, line B should not be greater than the amount of excess employer contributions/excess HSA funding distributions."

My employer added 3,838 in Box 12 and code W, this amount is the joint amount of mine and my employer's contributions to my HSA in 2024. I am unsure how to bypass the error. Is there something I need to adjust? This form/mechanism is quite confusing.

During the interview process, you have enter that you took a withdrawal for $3,838.  If you did not take a withdrawal, you will need to delete this response.  This should fix the error you are receiving.  To correct, follow the steps below:

  1. Sign into TurboTax
  2. Select Deductions and Credits
  3. Select Edit next to HSA
  4. Continue until you see "Let's enter your HSA Contributions"
  5. Remove amount from the question, "Any employer and payroll contributions made but withdrew (see screenshot below)

I would like to take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the directions below:

TurboTax Online:

  1. Sign into your online account.
  2. Locate the Tax Tools on the left-hand side of the screen.
  3. A drop-down will appear. Select Tools
  4. On the pop-up screen, click on “Share my file with agent.”
  5. This will generate a message that a diagnostic file gets sanitized and transmitted to us.
  6. Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.

TurboTax Desktop/Download Versions:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Click the Online tab in the black bar across the top of TurboTax and select “Send Tax File to Agent” *
  3. This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created.  Click on OK and the tax file will be sanitized and transmitted to us.
  4. Please provide the Token Number (including the dash) that was generated in the response.

*(If using a MAC, go to the menu at the top of the screen, select Help, then, “Send Tax File to Agent”)
