Form 8615 Update

I'm doing my daughter's taxes.  She has earned income and also 1099q income from a 529 Scholarshare account.  The program will not allow me to file her taxes because it says that form 8615 needs an update.  I can't file electronically or by mail without the update.  The software is saying it's updated. Deleting the form produces a taxable event.

Form 8615 is used to report tax for Certain Children Who Have Unearned Income.  Does your daughter has an unearned income like interest and dividends?   This form has not been finalized yet.  Per the update, it will not be ready until 2/20/2020.

I have the same issue.  I can see that TT says the form will not be ready until 2/20/20, but the form is available online to download and print at the IRS' website. If I can get the form myself online now directly from the IRS, why the delay for TT to get the form and incorporate it into the program?

The IRS has to finalize the form and then approve it for e-filing. It takes a little longer for a form to become available for e-filing in a software program.

Now it is saying 02/26/2020 :(

It is because our forms need to be approved by the IRS.  The forms are available if you are going to download from the IRS to complete it on your own.  However, e-filing is different.  Once the form is finalized by the IRS, it has to be coded into the special language the software uses and has to be thoroughly tested for calculations and e-filing acceptability.  IRS then has to approve it for e-file.  It always takes a little longer for a form to become available for e-file in a software program.  I hope this helps you understand the situation.  I truly understand your frustration and thank you for your patience.  See updates: IRS forms availability

Is there an option to choose filing by paper and not having to wait for the e-filed form update?

The release date moved again to 02/27.

Also the link to update details of "Federal Tax Forms (Critical)" is broken.

I believe this is a TurboTax issue.  They have given so many different dates that I just can't keep up anymore.  Now it's saying 3/04. This is the 4th date it has given me.

So, I too have watched the date move into March regarding getting filing help with this 8615 form.  If this continues, will I be unable to file my son's 2019 taxes in time?   Frustrating, and wish Turbo Tax would start giving some real answers/help.  I paid for a service that I'm unable to use?  Nervous

This has been delayed for some time. First 2/5, 2/15, 2/20, 2/26, 3/4ish. I wouldn't expect it to be ready then either. This is definitely a turbotax issue that has to be approved by the IRS. Problem is, if they had submitted the form correctly in the first place it would have been approved already like the others that are already approved. It seems they initially used 2018 figures (2600.00) rather than 2019 (2650.00) as one of the reasons.  In the meantime, those who have hundreds or thousands of dollars in refunds get to leave it with the IRS longer rather than in your bank. Even intuit proconnect users can't e-file. This is a completely unacceptable situation. How about trying this. Don't let anybody e-file through this software until all of the forms are ready (which wouldn't be until at least 3/4) and let me know how many customers you think will purchase this product again in the future. When I purchase something I expect to be able to use it.

I have confirmed that this is a TurboTax issue.  I went to H&R Block and their form was ready.  I was able to complete the form and efile my tax return all while TurboTax is still telling me this form won't be ready until 3/4/2020.  I should have went to H&R Block when I first got this message from TurboTax, I would have had my refund by now.

The form 8615 is no longer even listed on the "Federal Individual Form Availability" page.

This is worrisome!

If the issue is testing of the form by IRS for efiling, perhaps Intuit can at least release the form for the print option first, followed later by the form for the efile use.

8615 is back on the list of forms, with the date 3/4/20.

Absolute nonsense how awful TurboTax has been not just on getting this form done but providing clear information. Seems difficult to motivate customers to ditch one of the most popular pieces of software I’ve seen but y’all are really proving anything is possible!

The IRS and TurboTax try to work on forms that are most in demand first.  We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the delay.

Every new or updated tax form must pass several checkpoints before we can call it "final" in TurboTax. Here's how it works:

  1. The government must approve the form to make sure it follows the tax law.
  2. The government then has to approve the tax software-specific version of that form.
  3. We then rigorously test the form in the software to ensure it's accurate.
  4. The government gives our form their final stamp of approval.
  5. We can then include it in the TurboTax program.

It's the only form on the Federal list that isn't available, wouldn't that put it at the top of the list? 🙂

The forms are not listed in terms of priority -- they are listed by form number.  It is high on our list of forms to work on.

Totally unacceptable for Turbo tax to not have this form ready today.  They should be granting free filing for anyone who has this problem.

Looks like H&R Block is much better than turbo tax!
