I'm using Home & Business on my desktop.
I have three children and have the same issue for all three. One of the input screens asks how long the child has lived with me and I answer "for the entire year". Below that question is a second question, how many months did they live with me in the US? There is a drop down menu allowing the entry of the number of months, inclding zero months. Since I live in Canada, I enter zero but no matter how often I do this the program changes the answer to either 6 months or the entire year.
Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?
Thanks.
I should add that I am a US citizen living in Canada, filing a joint return with my US citizen spouse.
It may be that you have not indicated you and your spouse resided outside the US. In the "My Info" section "Edit" your personal information and indicate your resident "State" on 31 Dec was "Foreign or US Possession" and you did not live in any other states in 2023. Make the same entries for your spouse. Now you should be able to indicate your dependents lived with you all year but not in the US (0 months).
Thanks, but that is not it. Both of those fields were entered as you suggested, for both parents.
I should also have added that on P1 of the 1040, in the dependents section, the two older boys are listed in Col 5 as "credit for other dependents" and the baby in Col 4 as "child tax credit". I've gone over the input for each child and all the entries (except for name, birth date and ss#) are identical.
I do not know if this is part of the problem or is a separate issue.
What happens if you enter 12 months? To be a qualifying child requirement: The person must be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national, U.S. resident, or a resident of Canada or Mexico.
Thanks. Both parents and all three children are US citizens residing in Canada. All have Us social Security numbers and US passports.
I am having the same issue. Both us and children live in the US. This is a bug and should be addressed.
