Deductions

Is the requirement to take the same type of deduction (e.g. Standard vs Itemize) foe both spouses when filing separately something new to 2019 returns?

No, it's not new at all. That's been the rule for many, many years.

Out of curiosity I looked through historical tax forms and instructions. The rule about standard or itemized deductions for married filing separately has been in effect since 1944.

You can change this in the program as well.

Go back to your "Deductions & Credits" Screen.

Scroll down to the bottom and select "Wrap up Tax Breaks".

You should continue through the screens until you see the following screen:

Your information will be summarized based upon your input.  You have the option to see the breakdown or you can even select "Change my deduction"
