Claiming dependants

I used the IRS’s question/answer guide to see if I could claim my girlfriend on my taxes. It said I could. My question is can she still file a return without issue for her if she made less than the $4200 mentioned by the irs?

Yes, your girlfriend can file her own tax return. She must indicate on her tax return that she can be claimed as a dependent. When she enters her personal information in TurboTax there will be a box to check to indicate that someone else can claim her as a dependent.

Note that the question is whether someone can claim her, not whether someone else does claim her. Since you can claim her, she must check the box whether or not you actually do claim her.
