Bonus deductions

Hi!  My bonus received was $581.24.  After 182.43 in deductions, I cleared $398.81.  That's 31.4% of gross pay        SS(OASDI)  36.03

  Medicare  8.42

   Fed.127.60

    State  10.38

Does this sound right to anyone??  Got in touch with HR, but you know how that goes.... DEAD END!! I'm not too TAX Savvy but it just doesn't seem right.  Can someone HELP??

Thanx, Crazychic

Well the SS and Medicare are right.   The fed & state withholding are optional.   Did they ask you how much you wanted for withholding?  Like a percentage?   You will have to ask HR what method or table they used for withholding.

Withholding on bonuses are usually high.  But it is ONLY withholding.  The actual amount of tax is calculated on your tax return, so if they withheld too much, the excess amount will be refunded when you file your tax return.

FICA taxes (SS and Medicare) are 7.65%, income tax might be 12%, state taxes at 5%. That is about 24.65% tax. If they withhold 22% instead of 12% for federal it is possible to get around what you are saying.
