Why do I need a 1040SR form with a VT state return?

TurboTax prints out a Federal Form 1040SR to go with the printed forms for mailing my Vermont State return.  I can't figure out if I really need this.  TurboTax has never done this before.  I have not had any reason to recompute my Federal return.  Any one have an answer?  Otherwise my faith in TurbTax is shaken.

Yes. Vermont (VT) requires a complete copy of the federal return when you mail your state return. Here is an excerpt form the VT Income Tax Return Booklet.

  • If you are mailing in your return, please provide a complete copy of your federal Form 1040 (or 1040-SR), U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, as filed with the IRS along with all schedules. If filing jointly, you must enter the name and Social Security Number of your spouse/civil union partner.

Vermont requires it.  See this checklist:  https://tax.vermont.gov/individuals/income-tax-returns/filing-checklist
