You don’t have to have income in2021 to claim child tax credit. But to efile you can’t have a zero AGI. So just report a dollar of interest to allow filing.

There is not an earned income requirement for 2021 to claim the Child Tax Credit.  However, the IRS has not yet given guidance on how to file without income.

TurboTax will be updated as soon as that info is available.

To qualify for the Child Tax Credit, you must determine if your child is eligible. There are seven qualifying tests to consider: age, relationship, support, dependent status, citizenship, length of residency and family income.

If you had qualifying children in 2020, you may have already been receiving payments as an advance on your 2021 Child Tax Credit.

FYI ... no $1 of interest trick  is required if you have a refundable credit on the return.
