State not eligible for e-filing

New York return. TurboTax Home and Business. Windows 10.

Reason for E-file ineligibility:

Return claims a Solar and Wind Energy Credit Carryover

This is an error and needs to be removed from my return. HOW did it even get there? HOW do I remove it so I may file?

I do not own a home. I do not have solar or wind power. I never had a credit carryover. Where did this come from?

Found it.

The thing lives in the STATE return.

The tax/credit worksheet.

Part I, Section B, Line 26

make it BLANK. Mine had a zero printed on it.

After I deleted the 0, I rechecked my files and BAM!

Ready to submit without error.

You can delete this input in the federal interview section.

  1. Select the Personal tab
  2. Select Deductions & Credits
  3. Select Start to the right of Home Energy Credits
  4. The next page will be titled Energy-Saving Home Improvements
  5. Scroll down to the bottom of this page.  Under the question that says Did you make energy-saving improvements in 2019 or have a carryforward from 2018, select NO.
  6. This should remove the energy credit from your return.

Thanks for the suggestion. Followed your instructions. New York form is still not allowing e-file for the claim I did not make.

exact same reason after following your input:

Return claims a Solar and Wind Energy Credit Carryover.

Maybe-- It must be a line or a thing or a form or some error inside the state form. Somewhere in that convoluted jargon is a tick box or a line entry or some invisible code demon.

I feel the error is in the state file, because you said editing the federal form will fix the state, but it did not.

If what you described was the correct answer, possibly the state file never learned I updated my fed file. I'm frustratingly lost on this.

I might waste another day tomorrow and start over from the very very beginning, and forget all day today "taxing" never happened.

Thanks much for your input. Clearing that line and making it blank did the trick for me and efiling worked

Checking "no" in the federal did not work for myself either. Going back to the spot in the federal showed the "no" unchecked again. Thanks again for your perserverance.  WD

Hey. I’m actually having the same exact issue and I cannot find exactly where to remove the zero. I see above you guys mentioned line 26 but when efiling it doesn’t mention the line numbers. Could you pinpoint the category or subcategory it’ll fall under ? I am new to filing and this is extremely frustrating @aurora385

It should be under other tax credits, "nonrefundable credits" make sure everything is blank.

Hello. I'm also getting the same thing stared above. I went through everything and it appears to have nothing in the boxes. I'm not sure how to fix this.

@NysHeather

To confirm, may I get the state and error you are getting when trying to file?  Please comment in the thread here and someone will reach out with the next steps.

This finally worked!!  Thanks so much!  If you have an on-line version of Turbotax, you can't see lines so you have to go to the section "Other Tax Credits" then "Non-Refundable Credits".  After you get to that section, make sure those boxes are blank!  I had zeros in both boxes.

I have this same issue but I don't see "Other Tax Credits" and "Nonrefundable credits." I see "Other Deductions and Credits" but there is no "Nonrefundable credits" under that category. I'm sorry, I might just be missing something simple but I'm about to slam my head into a wall on this one.

You are looking under the Federal Tax section of your return and you need to be looking on your State return input for these items.

I went to the section "Credits and Other Taxes" on my State tax --> then "Nonrefundable Credits" listed under Other Tax Credit section and then cleared out 0 in Solar and Wind Energy Credit Carryover box. This worked perfectly fine. Thank you all for posting this.
