Previous tax year

If you need to file a tax return for a previous year, you can purchase and download the software to prepare and mail the return from intuit.turobotax.com.

Alternatively, you can download the forms from the IRS website: https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/prior-year.

@RachelW33 What if I already paid for last year's product, but never finished the return?

If you were using TurboTax Online for your return last year, you would not have paid for the return until you were ready to file it.

 

If you were using TurboTax online to prepare your 2018 return, you will have to download and install the 2018 version to your computer.   The online version is now only for 2019 returns.  You can purchase the 2018 program by going to this link:  TurboTax Previous Years Products.

 

You can download the actual TurboTax file of the return (.tax2018) and complete it using the 2018 TurboTax program downloaded to your computer.

 

To do this, please follow these steps:

1. Sign in to your TurboTax account.  You will be on your Tax Home screen.
2. Scroll down to Your tax returns & documents.
3. Select 2018 (if it's not already highlighted).
4. Select Download .tax file.  The file with automatically download.
5. Your online return will be found in the Downloads folder on your computer.

To open the return in TurboTax desktop edition, click on the Find a Tax File link on the opening screen and then navigate to the Downloads folder

I have not done my 2018 taxes.  I understand to use TurboTax that I have to purchase the Intuit software.  IF I can find it elsewhere for less money, in an unopened and sealed package will I be ale to use it even though I didn't buy it online from TT?  Also, is that software capable of doing state taxes regardless of state?  Thank you!   Mike

 

Yes, you can. Ensure you are buying it from a reputable supplier. Make sure you register the software before you start using it.
