NYS e file return rejected

I received email from Intuit that my e file return for NY was rejected due to a software problem

The email indicated once I opened the return in Turbo Tax the problem would be identified and that I would be assisted step by step.

No problem was identified and no assistance was provided.

Please advise.

Same story here. It looks like the problem is a TurboTax bug. The advice just told me to verify some deductions on my Federal return that didn't apply to me (Moving Expenses, Legal Fees, Other Investment Expenses etc) or just to re-file. I hit re-file without changing anything as the deductions were not relevant.

Same error message as the rest. Followed the TurboTax instructions and updated the Federal return. TurboTax then says since re-check State and efile again. Here's the problem, when you go to efile state, it only gives you the option to print and mail, but TurboTax also says since the original was efiled, NYS will only accept another efile. In other words a total Catch-22.

My state return was also rejected. Got the message that I have to update turbotax when I try to submit the return but when I click update it says I'm already up to date.

Same with me.  I resubmitted and it now says "description of error" and "what needs to be done" so it was rejected for a second time.   At this point there are no errors and the software is up to date ... do I resubmit again?

Same here. Resubmitted, and now rejected again.

I live in California and I got the same email.  Nothing to update and I don't see any solution from this string.

I had the same problem. I filed my NYS return earlier today. I received the email that my state return was rejected from TurboTax late this evening. Under the "What Happened" heading there was nothing, it was blank. When I opened TurboTax I got the state return rejected screen but no explanation as to why it was rejected or what the error was so I could make an update. I then walked through my entire state return and found one possible error. There was a box requesting the date I was filing my return. I started and finished my return about a week ago but I did not file at that time. I wanted some time to have another look at the numbers I entered. That box contained an earlier date in February. I caught it on my Federal return and changed the date to the actual date I filed the return (today). My Federal return was accepted by the IRS earlier today. That box never was displayed for my state return so I assumed that TurboTax entered the same date as on my Federal return. After making that change I refiled my state return. It will be interesting to see if NYS accepts the return now. TurboTax went through the same error checks it did the first time and found no errors once again. So much for the integrity of those error checks.

Got the same message today. The software is including my exempt NYS pension as taxable income.  I am not able to correct the problem and it now appears I owe NYS income tax on am exempt pension.  I have used Turbo Tax for years but I am not at all happy with the software this year.  I submitted a question to them about this issue 2 weeks ago and never received a reply, apparently it still isn't fixed.

On my second reject, I got an error re: NYS Pension.  (I have a company sponsored-pension, that is taxable).  I stepped through the process (again) and resubmitted.  At this point my NY return is "pending" so maybe it will be accepted.  I don't get how they could find errors after you file, but not before?

I think I solved my problem of not being able to resubmit my NYS return after fixing the errors. When you get to the screen Ready To File Taxes, it will show Federal first. I was checking Print Federal, thinking why would I pick efile again if my federal has already been accepted. Choosing to print federal and mail, by default will not allow you to efile in NYS. After checking efile Federal return, the next screen automatically recognized I already efiled Federal and just needed to efile with NYS again. The process then work to efile my NYS return a second time. Hopefully with the corrections it wont be rejected again. Come on Intiut. We paid for a service and it takes the consumer to answer your mistakes.

3rd time was the charm and return was accepted.  Guess I learned a lesson to wait a week or so before submitting my return since apparently  the bugs aren't all worked out.

Based upon all the comments about NYS pensions, I checked the 1099-R in TurboTax for my wife's NYSTRS pension. TurboTax had changed the designation from NY State Educator pension to federal pension. I fixed that one item, and resubmitted again (after two rejections) late last night. It was accepted this afternoon.

Update on my NYS return resubmission:  After correcting the filing date and e-filing my state return for the second time, the return was accepted by NYS per the email I received from Intuit. I can't believe that NYS would reject a return on a filing date alone. And Intuit better not have changed anything on the return I submitted as it could leave me open to possible liability if the change is incorrect. And it would leave Intuit open for even bigger liability for tampering with returns. I suspect what happened was their software that hands off the returns to the state had a bug in it and they finally got around to correcting it. However Intuit would never admit to it since it would cast doubt about the integrity of their entire suite of software they sell. So much for thoroughly testing their software before marketing it and relying on their customers for testing and troubleshooting it for them.

Same problem here,  not sure where to go next, TurboTax sucks this year, never had an issue with it, be using for many, many years.

Mine was accepted on the 3rd try.  As a recap, 1st reject was about deductions that it apparently never prompted me for (they did not apply to me) and 2nd reject related to a question on pension income which again I was not prompted on.

Fixed problem by uninstalling original program,  reinstalled and let it do one big update.  Resubmitted return for filing and it worked. Ken

@TheS1R

This keeps happening to me as well. Wife's NYC teacher's pension keeps changing to Fed Govt pension. Also, keeps reverting from getting regular payments to NOT getting regular payments. Exactly how did you get the correct info to stick?

Thanks.
