NJ is requesting 1099s

First time Turbotax user.  I've filed my 2021 FED and NJ State forms.  FED Refund received.  HOORAY!

For NJ however, I received a notice that I need to provide: "copies of W2s, and any 1099 statements showing New Jersey withholdings, and any PTE-K1s showing New Jersey tax paid on your behalf."

I will scan the appropriate 1099s showing my NJ tax withholdings, but I wonder WHY I NEED TO DO THIS?  I suppose NJ needs to confirm the data that I input in Turbotax, but shouldn't I have BEEN WARNED BY THE SOFTWARE that NJ might ask for this? Is this strictly a NJ thing?  Doesn't NJ already have copies of my 1099s?

Thanks for any response.

You may be subject to a random audit by NJ, or perhaps NJ did not get copies of the forms they are requesting.

Did you efile NJ, or file it by mail?  Apparently the state is trying to verify your state withholdings.
