New Mexico PIT-X not working

I am a new mexico non resident who is filing an amended federal return. All went well with modifying it except for the New Mexico State return. My change was to contribute to a HSA - no changes to my New Mexico based income.

Form PIT-X is assessing nearly 20K in additional taxes on Line 18 than it should be. The problem appears to be that the proper tax shown on form PIT-B is not carrying over to Line 18 of PIT-X as it should be.

Anyone else facing same issue with their amended New Mexico State return?

So you are having to allocate your NM income using form PIT-B? And was the PIT-B on your original return,  but not on your amended return? Or is it on your amended return also?

Is there anything in the box on line 18a on your original PIT-1, like a "B"? How about on your PIT-X (line 18a)?

1. Yes I am allocating the New Mexico portion of my Income using PIT-B.

2. I made no changes to the New Mexico amount on the PIT-B when I was amending.

3.. The PIT-B does show on my amended return, with a different Federal Taxable amount (it went down). The PIT-X , and the original PIT-I does have a "B" on it, but it seems to be calculating my New Mexico tax tables applied to the entire Federal amount for the amended return,  not the New Mexico portion of my income as allocated on the PIT-B (like it did on the original return)

On the PIT-B, the tax is calculated by creating a ratio of NM income to federal income (line 12), then calculating the tax on the federal income (PIT-1, line 18) and multiplying that tax by the ratio (PIT-B, line 14). So, you are not taxed on your NM income, but on the federal income, then the tax is reduced by the ratio of NM income to federal income.

I am a bit concerned about your statement that the PIT-X is changing how it is calculating the tax. Can you give me some numbers?

Ok, here are some numbers rounded to nearest 1k from PIT-X

Line 17 372k as filed, 364k as amended

Line 18 $191 as filed, 17k as amended

Line 18a has a B

Line 14 of PIT-B shows $185.

is there a way to get Tubotax to open a ticket and provide support on this??

I would like to take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the directions below:

TurboTax Online:

  1. Sign into your online account.
  2. Locate the Tax Tools on the left-hand side of the screen.
  3. A drop-down will appear. Select Tools
  4. On the pop-up screen, click on “Share my file with agent.”
  5. This will generate a message that a diagnostic file gets sanitized and transmitted to us.
  6. Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.

TurboTax Desktop/Download Versions:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Click the Online tab in the black bar across the top of TurboTax and select “Send Tax File to Agent” *
  3. This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created.  Click on OK and the tax file will be sanitized and transmitted to us.
  4. Please provide the Token Number (including the dash) that was generated in the response.

*(If using a MAC, go to the menu at the top of the screen, select Help, then, “Send Tax File to Agent”)

It would not take token number the dash is the x. AI keeps thinking it is a phone number

Now that I have seen your return, I can confirm that this appears to be an issue that is already being worked on.

Please see this TurboTax Help page and sign up to be notified of any updates.

P.S., thank you for reformatting the token number. AI is not all it is cracked up to be...

As an update, there was a fix applied that got rid of the phantom 18K in taxes. I got a message that the support issue was closed.

But now when I file, my New Mexico return is rejected. Turbotax message says sign in and there will be instructions on what to do to correct, but I don't see anything.

What should I do? The support number seems not to be able to resolve, and April 15 is fast approaching. can I at least get my $45 efile fee refunded?

Thank you for the update.

Who rejected your NM return? New Mexico? or TurboTax? What was the exact message (and reject code, if one)?

Unfortunately, we in the Community do not handle issues like refund requests but only tax issues. Please contact TurboTax Support at 800-446-8848.
