Multiple State Tax Returns: CA and MA Residency Status

Hi,

I moved permanently to Massachusetts from California in 2021 after I got a new job in MA. I started working for my present employer in MA on 06/29/2021.

I have income from both CA  (till 06/29/2021) and MA  (from 06/29/2021) for 2021. I received 2 W2s. I do not own or rent any property in California after the move.

Since I moved to Massachusetts on June 29, 2021, I lived in MA for more than 183 days and less than 183 days in CA.

What is my residency status for filing state taxes in both California and Massachusetts?

You are a part-time resident of California and Massachusetts for 2021 since you made a permanent move.

File part-year returns for both states and report income that you earned while living in each state.

The number of days is only a factor if you were temporarily present in a state and did not establish residency.
