Making us do separate returns

Hi there

We had a move last year from Virginia to Maine and we were able to file jointly for federal and for the  state of Maine. turbo tax is saying I need to file separately for the state of Virginia. I’ve never had to do this before and and can’t find information on how to do that. Any recommendations ?

To file separately on your state tax return, you need to complete a federal return filing separately. You will need to create a new TurboTax account to prepare the Virgnia return filing separately, and you will just enter one spouse's tax information on it. Once the federal return is complete, you can then complete the state return and file it only, since you will have already filed your federal return as married-joint in the TurboTax account you are working on now.

You can purchase the desktop version of TurboTax that will allow you to file multiple tax returns without creating new accounts as you do with the online version. However, since you will only need to do the Virginia return this year, it may be simpler to just create and pay for a new online account to prepare the Virginia return this year.
